Invasive Removal

The Stewards have been busy this year with organizations and volunteers through Habitat Acquisition Trust, the Metchosin volunteers and Spirit Bay volunteers, we’ve recently started reclamation work on Sutiacum road which is named after my great grandfather Jasper Charles and is the main road for members housing on Sc’ianew…Thank you so much to all of our amazing volunteers for all the hard work you do in helping us restore our lands to its natural beauty!!!!

Workshops

One of our key focuses is bringing in key knowledge keepers/teachers to share their knowledge with our members and youth. We’ve done workshops with Charlene George form the Sierra club, Nathan Fisk from Parks Canada, 2 workshops with Habitat Acquisition Trust, Elder Earl Claxton Jr. and DFO Mammal researchers Stephen Raverty UBC, and Paul Cottrell DFO. These workshops help to bring awareness and information needed to move forward as one, to show the necessary steps to restoration and reclamation by providing valuable learning skills in each workshop we offer, many more to come!!!!

Indigenous Resiliency Fund

This funding allowed us to build our own vegetable gardens, prep the land and buy the necessary greenhouses for our community. We also were able to accept vegetable donations from the City of Victoria, and Swcenentil Food Initiative with this funding opened up new avenues for us to collect necessary vegetables for the year for our community. We received $30,000.00 from IRF. Thank you !!

First Nations Health Authority (FNHA)

The funding given to us was used for two special days for us at Sc’ianew, the first was an Aboriginal Day Celebration where we had a seafood feast of crab, oysters, fish, with pork chops and maui pork as well as beans, and Corn on the cob, we also had a bouncy castle for youth, and drumming and historical table set up by my mom Evelyn Vandermaas to show history of Scia’new.  The second day funded was for Drug Overdose awareness day, where we shared stories of those gone before us due to this illness, we played B.I.N.G.O, had door prizes and shared an amazing meal, both days were funded with a total of $4700.00, Thank you so much to FNHA for allowing us to share these days with our community through your funding.

Second Harvest

This food security grant gave us the capability to provide food/gift cards/snacks for all on and off first nations members of Sc’ianew from the months of March 2022 to June 2022. The youth received enough snacks for 3 months, we had a Food distribution day where we provided members with gas cards to come to our shop to get pre-packaged food , snacks for their children and we provided a BBQ the day of, we were also able to provide members of Sc’ianew across Canada with gift cards to help get through the financial crisis we all felt through Covid. We received $38,800.00. Thank you !!!!
